Want a cool carseat?

When I'm not being a mom, or a wife, I'm being a CPST. That stands for Child Passenger Safety Technician. That basically means that I educate parents and families on how to best keep their children safe in the car. Motor Vehicle Crashes are the number on killer of kids in the US, and 8 out of 10 carseats are installed incorrectly. I became a tech shortly after Eli's death as a testimony to him. I didn't want any other parents to have to go through losing a baby and all the guilt, anger, and fear that go along with it, and I though by becoming a tech, I could help them keep their kids safe.

Being a tech these past two years, and now being an instructor candidate (that means I'm on my way to becoming an instructor, so that I can teach individuals and help them receive their own certification), has been a huge blessing in my life. I can't tell you how many kids' families I've been able to meet, get to know, and help. For the most parts, parents want to do what's best for their children, they're just not educated in the area of car safety. That's where I come in, and when they're open, I can help them not just install their carseat, but teach them to do it themselves so that they feel confident and in control of their child's safety.

I have a friend named Laura who is also a technician. She runs an amazing organization called the Kyle David Miller Foundation . The foundation's primary goals are to educate the public about car safety and to provide seats to families who cannot afford them in order to keep kids in 5 point harnesses longer. They do this in honor of Kyle, a little boy who died in a car accident when he was three years old.

They have a really cool giveaway/prize package going on right now. They are giving away a Graco Snugride 32 carseat and matching stroller. Know anyone having a new baby? You could win and also benefit a simply amazing organization...check it out!

If anyone has any questions about car seats, kids in cars, or how to best keep your kiddo safe in the car, please feel free to leave a comment or email me!

Car seat safety is extremely important to me. I know that I cannot prevent bad things from happening, but it makes me feel better to do everything in my power to keep my children safe. My 5 and 6 year olds (almost 6 and 7 year olds, actually) still ride in 5 pt harness car seats (Radians by Sunshine kids) and my almost 3 year old is still rear-facing.

Do you still have both of your big kids in a 5 point harness? My son is 4 and a half and I have him in a booster seat now. He's 42 pounds and pretty tall.

You should do a post with instructions on how to properly install a car seat. Maybe do a video showing you installing an infant seat as well as a big kid car seat. It would really be cool.

You're a great mom!

I have a question! {Hi btw, I read your blog all the time and am going to start commenting more :)}

I am going to have to buy our younger daughter a new seat soon. My oldest daughter has a Britax Decathalon. We honestly cannot afford another $300 seat, so i'm wondering if I should move my older daughter to a Roundabout and pass the Decathalon down to the baby?
What do you think? LOL sorry that was long.

W ejust took our boys 6 and 5 out of there car seats with the 5 point harness and are now just using the seats with the car seat belt. How long are you supposed to keep them in the 5 point harness?

My grandson is only 18 months old. He is still in a 5 point harness. But like Konnie - how long are they suppose to stay in one? Also if they are a tall child but under weight do you change car seats depending on height or weight? Thanks you have a great blog and like Kaycee I have been reading a long time but not commenting much.
