Clean up, Clean Up, Everybody do your part.

So, I happen to think an almost 4 and almost 5 year old should be capable of cleaning their own room. Now, just so we're clear, I'm not talking deep cleaning, I'm talking about picking up the mess they make in there day to day.

Ava and Jace make a mess in their room every day, mostly because they have a two hour rest time in there each afternoon where they do just about everything except rest. I am not willing to get rid of that time, because it's what I like to call my rest time, too. They have a lot of toys in their room because I don't want them in the living room.

Lately, it's gotten bad. Every week or so, I will go in, clean up with them, and leave them with a clean room. Ava is always thrilled about it, but then they just mess it all up again. The past couple of morning, I have told them that they get breakfast after their room is picked up. It's working okay, but sometimes they say they just aren't hungry. I don't turn the tv on at all until their room is picked up, but apparently they're not that into television, either. =) It's ridiculous....Seth is better at picking up than both of them combined. He will very methodically pick up every block and put it away in the bin while Ava and Jace are still wandering around pathetically moaning about how they can't do it.

So I'm at my wit's end. I want to go in and throw all the toys they don't pick up away, but I can't quite bring myself to do it.

So I'm bringing it to you. How do you get your kids to clean their room (and, preferably, keep it clean).

And, by the way, please don't tell me the maid does it...I may die from jealousy!
